Courses from Sukoon

Here are just a few examples of the many courses available from Sukoon Ltd:

Effective fundraising applications
Writing fundraising applications can be a daunting task; you need to sum up your needs in just a few words, in a way that “sells” you to the prospective funder. This course will break down applications into sections and show you how to best present yourself in each one. It will look at the importance of being clear as to why you are asking for money, how to ask for the right amount and being able to demonstrate how you would use it. Other topics will include how to summarise your organisation’s activities and make-up, being able to adapt your “sell” to different audiences and the necessity of matching your needs to the funder’s requirements.

Finance for non-financial staff
Those with responsibility for budgets in an organisation need to understand the financial implications of their organisation’s accounts. This is particularly the case for board members, who have a legal responsibility to ensure that they monitor and safeguard the assets of their organisation. This course will give you a basic understanding of financial management: financial jargon explained, how to understand and interpret company accounts (income and expenditure, cash flow, operating costs), the importance of financial controls and being able to compare year on year accounts. In short, the course will give you what you need to make informed decisions about your organisation’s finances.

Fundraising for beginners
For people new to fundraising there is often a feeling of  “Where do I start?”. This course looks at the core elements of successful fundraising. It will consider the different ways you  can find funding, the difference between fundraising and fund-chasing and  how to integrate your fundraising efforts.  It will show you how to identify the right sources for your funding needs and the best ways of approaching potential funders. The course will emphasise the importance of having a fundraising plan; an on-going effort which ensures that you can develop strategies to find income to support your organisation’s objectives and successfully plan for the future.

Making meetings work

Any meeting  you are planning, be it staff meeting, supervision session or external meeting, needs to be worth the effort. This course will show you how to get the most out of meetings by considering the steps you need to take before, during and after the meeting. These include preparing for the meeting, keeping it on track, concentrating on outcomes and ensuring decisions are acted upon.

The new trustee
What is your role as a trustee, and what are your responsibilities? This course will clarify the purpose of trustees, not only in terms of good practice, but also with regard to your legal responsibilities. It will look at what skills you bring to the role and will help you identify any additional training that might enhance your contribution to the board.

Negotiation skills
An element of negotiation is involved whenever you are dealing with people, particularly in the work environment and whether in person, on the phone or by email. Ideally, both sides want to feel their needs have been met, what has been  called a "win-win outcome". This training will examine the elements needed to ensure a mutually satisfying outcome. It will cover: your current negotiation skills; preparing for negotiation - what do you want? ; understanding the other side's interests; communication skills and body language; resolving problems rather than "winning"; knowing when and how to walk away.
